About Plumas S.A.F.E.

Lee Brooks, Plumas SAFE Firearms Safety InstructorLee Brooks: Lee started shooting with his Dad in the early 1960’s by learning to still hunt squirrel using a .22 cal rifle and then dove, quail and crow with a 20 gauge single shot. Moving to .22 pistol plinking with his WWI Veteran Grandfather and WWII Veteran Father as his safety and shooting instructors. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Hospital Corpsman and started large caliber pistol shooting.

After Nursing School and while working as a Trauma Nurse in Oakland’s Emergency Rooms he witnessed the vast numbers of victims of violent crimes perpetrated on good people that had no clue as to how to avoid violent encounters or defend themselves and their families. The seeds for S.A.F.E. were planted.

Those seeds sprouted as he instructed his sons in firearm safety and shooting. He realized his own need for formal training and has received training through the NRA as a Range Safety Officer and an Instructor for basic and first steps pistol, rifle and shotgun. He is also an instructor in the NRA’s Home Firearm Safety, Refuse To Be A Victim and Personal Protection In The Home classes. In addition, he is a Department of Justice Handgun Safety Instructor and instructs the Concealed Carry Weapons class for Plumas County.

He has attended most pistol classes, edged weapons, rifle and shotgun classes at Front Sight Training Institute. Having been an armed citizen for the past 20 years he is proud that he has never had to produce or use his weapon. His emphasis in his training is awareness/avoidance and situational responses to potentially violent encounters. As a self-described Pistol Packing Pacifist, he believes the fight you will always win is the one you are never in. The weapon you carry is a tool, and the tool of last resort.

James Brooks, Plumas SAFE Firearms InstructorJames Brooks: James is an active pistol shooter and all-around gun enthusiast. His firearm training began with his family and friends at the tender age of 10 years old. He developed the safety skills needed to ensure a zero accident record for the next 14 years of his shooting career.

Not content to focus on just shooting sports, James branched out into a variety of training fields earning certifications and receiving expert training in; emergency medicine (EMT I), wilderness medicine, swift water rescue, high angle rescue, and vehicle extrication. While these fields were fun and exciting, firearms training always remained an important part of James life. He became a NRA certified instructor to better his ability to teach the skills he enjoyed. James expanded his formal training to the prestigious Front Sight training institute where he recently received the honor of distinguished graduate in defensive pistol. That teaching instruction and training has continued to this day in an effort to expand his expertise and better enhance his ability to teach.
